Lavialle Campbell
Lavialle Campbell is a multimedia artist living and working in Los Angeles, California. Driven by the personal pleasure that meticulous work gives her, she uses fabric, thread and a home sewing machine to create contemporary, abstract quilts and sculptural works. Her compulsion to create has resulted in everything from macramé wall-hangings and seed beadwork to printmaking, as well as more intimate pieces exploring women’s health and African American histories. Using materials historically associated with women's work, her work challenges the idea of what paintings can be, or what can be called a painting.
Campbell studied in several of the prominent art programs in California. Attending Otis College of Art and Design, Santa Monica College, and UCLA, she explored ceramics, glasswork, printmaking, and sculpture with renowned local artists like Lisa Adams, Laddie John Dill, George Herms, Debra Sussman, and Roland Young.
